How many kwh does 1 w of solar PV generate in our area over a year?

I'm wondering for the upstate NY area how many kWh of electricity 1 kW of solar PV generates over a year. I've heard that under optimal conditions (southern exposure, etc) it is 1.1 kWh/W/year, but I wanted to confirm this.

This would appear to be the key number necessary to figure out approximately the size of a solar PV system you need based on your electrical usage. Take kwh used in a year and divide it by 1.1 to get the approximate size of the system you need (under optimal conditions).

Thanks,
Karim

Using PVWatts - a tool developed by the National Energy Research Lab, I came up with roughly 1,214 kWh per year. In the summer you'll have days where that 1kW system will produce as much as 5.72 kWh per day, but in the winter months that could drop to a low of 1.77 kWh/day in December.
